Indoor Swimming Pools for Families on Long Island

Submitted by Thien August on Mon, 01/31/2022 - 8:55am

With travel perhaps limited this winter, it's harder to find a place for kids to dip their feet in the pool. Sure, you can plan an outing to one of these family-friendly water parks nearby, but why not stay home and visit one of the many indoor swimming pools Long Island has to offer?

We’ve rounded up some of the most affordable and family-friendly indoor pools across Long Island. Some are open to community or town residents, while others welcome nonresidents. Many offer swimming lessons, too. So read on for our picks for family-friendly indoor pools across Long Island, and find more wet and wild fun in our Guide to Beaches, Pools, and Water Play.

Where to Donate Toys and Baby Gear on Long Island

Submitted by Thien August on Tue, 01/05/2021 - 2:07pm

The Interfaith Nutrition Network accepts donations of unopened baby items and toys.

If your kids are anything like most, their holiday wish lists were filled with requests for new toys. But now that your house is overflowing with new treasures, what do you do with all of the old ones or those that your child never even opened? Or all of the baby equipment that was gently—or never—used? Consider supporting one of these local charities accepting donations.

We've rounded up 11 local Long Island charities that could use your support. We always recommend checking current donation requirements. Many organizations only accept new, unused items.

For safety reasons, most charities do not accept cribs or car seats. However, many accept strollers, bouncers, and even baby care items such as diapers. Before dropping by, contact these local charities to make sure they haven't reached their donation limits. One other tip: Ask your school, local library, or church if they can use your second-hand items. Often, those institutions are willing to accept used toys and books from someone they know and trust.

Looking for more ways to help your community? There are plenty of local volunteer opportunities for kids and families.

Spanish, French and More: Foreign-Language Classes for Kids on Long Island

Submitted by Thien August on Tue, 02/11/2020 - 7:53am

Early Childhood teachers and students at All About Spanish in North Bellmore.

Learning a second (or third) language can be hugely beneficial to kids. Research has shown that language learning can not only improve memory and problem-solving skills, but can also help with multitasking and improve academic performance. Not to mention that being able to communicate in multiple languages will help kids navigate our increasingly diverse communities, workplaces, and schools.

If you have less than fond memories of sitting through high school Spanish or French classes, don't fret. There are a number of schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties that offer classes—including mommy/daddy-and-me—to expose your child to a new world of words and phrases in a fun learning environment. It's easier for babies and young children to master another language than it is for teens and adults. Learning with your child can be a bonding experience and something that you can share for years to come.

Depending on the school, classes are offered in levels from beginners to advanced. Prices for classes vary by school; contact each directly for costs.

And be sure to look at our classes and enrichment guide for more ways to learn what your kids might enjoy.

Thanksgiving Day Runs for Long Island Families

Submitted by Thien August on Thu, 11/07/2019 - 9:00am

Get the whole family moving and support Smiles Change Lives in Blue Point.

Before the Thanksgiving festivities begin (not to mention the eating frenzy), why not get the whole family up and moving with a good old-fashioned turkey trot. These runs and walks are held in Nassau, Suffolk, and the East End around the time of the holiday, and many are open to all ages, often featuring a "fun run" just for kids.

Many of these races start bright and early, so even if you're the one putting the turkey in the oven or have to hit the road by noon to get to grandma's, you still should be able to fit in a holiday trot. For more seasonal adventures, check out our Long Island Events Calendar and our November GoList.
