A Faery Hunt: Auntie Angelica's Fairy Garden - Review

1/30/12 - By Roberta B

One of LA's hidden gems for little ones is an outdoor show known as A Faery Hunt, a gnomadic experience which is part hike, part play and all fun, taking place at several parks around town. Recently, the sprightly crew added an indoor show to the repertoire, Auntie Angelica Root's Fairy Garden, and it's a real crowd-pleaser among the under-eight set. Performances currently take place at Sherman Oaks' Whitefire Theater.

The show features several of the winged and unicorn-riding characters from the group's outdoor shows, all of whom are encountered by Auntie Angelica as she waters her plants and muses to herself in rhyming couplets. Plants come to life, fairies dance, original songs are sung, and puns are bandied shamelessly. The storyline and pace are perfect for littlest audience members, but the wacky humor keeps adults entertained as well. Fairy garb is recommended - particularly for anyone inclined to raise hands during audience participation time - and advance reservations guarantee a mention of your child's name during the show.

We wouldn't call this show a substitute for the outdoor, say-isn't-that-a-fairy-behind-that-tree theater experience that gave the group its name, but on a chilly day, or for Faery fans looking for another hit, it's a real treat. Also, the hour-long show is adaptable for any space, making it an intriguing option for birthday parties.

Auntie Angelica Root's Fairy Garden currently plays once a month at the Whitefire Theater, on the last Sunday of the month; be sure to check our calendar for details. Plenty of free street parking is available, and there is a Starbuck's across the street, for parents who move slowly at 10:30 on a Sunday morning.
