Weekday Event Picks for LA Kids: Free LEGO & Cathedral Dog Day Afternoon, July 6-10

7/6/15 - By Jacqueline Stansbury

There’s an important new development for LEGO fans: the Monthly Mini Model Build now lasts two days instead of one! That’s right, the free LEGO signature event is on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and you can reserve a model in advance. In fact, you must reserve; walk-ins will no longer be admitted.

Meanwhile, pet lovers have the 9th annual Dog Day Afternoon to look forward to at the Cathedral; Santa Monica’s Twilight Dance Series (and Tongva Park after Dark) commence for the summer, and the Natural History Museum revels in the warm summer evenings with a Friday night garden event.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Vincent Minnelli’s musical masterpiece Meet Me in St. Louis screens at LACMA this week. My family always enjoys a picnic at the Tar Pits park; combine that with a classic film for summer perfection. Meet Me in St. Louis features a young Judy Garland and luminous child actress Margaret O’Brien. Why take the kids? The movie is a fascinating depiction of turn of the century family and teen life in America; teenagers are likely to be intrigued by the detailed depiction of their counterparts at the beginning of the 20th century. Fascinating fact: before that there were no "teenagers" – just children and adults. My mom took me to see this movie as a kid, and I never forgot it. It's not a movie for super young or sensitive children, but mature kids and teenagers are likely to moved by the serious themes, and everyone will love the music.
