This Week's Picks: Surf's Up and the Lights are Down July 28 - August 1

Summer heat is on. Let the little ones cool off at the movies, but be sure to embrace the treasures of the Pacific and celebrate our Southern California Beach Culture. This week, the grunion are running in San Pedro and The South Bay is full of surfers. If you need to head indoors, the Norton Simon is just one of many museums offering free admission.

1. Grunion Run– Monday
Create an unforgettable childhood memory. Bundle up, grab a flashlight, and head to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro. Doors open at 8pm. Be sure not to miss the classic black and white movie about Grunion mating rituals and then head down to the beach to wait for their run. Schedules are imprecise and subject to change. Check the website.

2. Tiny Tot Screenings at the El Capitan - Tuesday
Tuesdays at 10am the lights are dimmed, but not completely, and the volume is turned down to accommodate the sensitive ears of toddlers. This week is a 2D screening of Planes: Fire and Rescue. The theater itself is an art deco palace, not to be missed.

3. Tongva Park Community Dance – Wednesday
Enjoy Santa Monica’s newest park and learn to salsa dance. This community dance event features live music: Orquestra Tabaco Y Ron and professional instruction. All levels of dancing ability are welcome. If you work up an appetite, Santa Monica’s oldest restaurant, Chez Jay, is right there.

4. International Surf Festival – Thursday
The South Bay beach cities of Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan unite to host this event celebrating all things beach. Surfing is prominent, but there is also sand soccer for anybody suffering from World Cup Withdrawal.

5. Norton Simon Museum of Art – Friday
The first Friday evening of each month is free at Pasadena’s Norton Simon Museum. Ballerinas in the household will be especially charmed by Degas’ sculpture.
