Volunteering with the Kids in Litchfield County

11/10/16 - By eliza p

There are so many wonderful opportunities around the holidays for children to consider people less fortunate than themselves by purchasing food and gifts for those in need.  However, it is often more difficult to find places for kids to volunteer their time. In Litchfield County, there are a number of ways for kids to be involved using their physical presence rather than purchased presents.

Retirement communities and nursing homes welcome children and families who wish to volunteer during the holidays.  Families can visit, bring cookies and sing carols room to room.  All that is needed to set up a visit is a call to the volunteer coordinator.  Here is a list of some of the communities that welcome volunteers now and throughout the year. We've also written about opportunities to volunteer in Hartford and Fairfield Counties.

Soup Kitchens, such as the Torrington Soup Kitchen, need volunteers of all ages to bring in food and to assist in food preparation, serving and clean-up (contact Lisa at 860 482-0130.) Their website lists most needed donation items.

Another well known soup kitchen is Loaves and Fishes Hospitality in New Milford (860 350-6612.) Please call to see how you and your family can best help them.

Finally, it seems a good time of year to think about soldiers over seas. The Washington Town Hall employees and local residents send support boxes to troops in Afghanistan.  The troops biggest request is for letters about life in the states.  Letters with drawings from children are even more appreciated.  Every Friday they send out two boxes. One includes toiletries and snacks like beef jerky and popcorn. The other is filled with letters. So check with your town hall and see if they have such a program, and if not, the Washington group will be pleased to send notes from your kids (call 860-868-2259.)
